Whiskey Weekend at Hotel Congress

2nd Annual Whiskey Weekend at Hotel Congress

Tucson, Ariz—-A three day celebration of whiskey, featuring an outstanding lineup of spirits and whisky experts, will take place at Hotel Congress and Maynards Market and Kitchen on December 17th, 18th and 19th. In its second year, Whisky Weekend is the brainchild of Hotel Congress/Maynards Bar Manager Aaron Defeo.  The event offers a rare opportunity to explore the wonderful world of whisky in all its glory from Canadian to American, to Bourbon, Scotch, Rye, and Irish. “I feel spirits are underrepresented in the tasting world, and scotch and bourbon have always been guilty pleasures of mine. Our Whiskey Weekend gives the public an opportunity to experience an industry-style tasting of premium whiskeys at an affordable price. The focus here is on appreciation and education” said DeFeo

The fun begins on Thursday, December 17th at 6pm on the new climate controlled Plaza at Hotel Congress featuring “Master of Whiskey” Thomas Turner*, one of only a few beverage experts in the world with the distinguished title of “Master of Whiskey”, who will conduct the opening ceremonies.

Turner will guide attendees through select tastings of 10 different premium whiskeys (from a total offering of 20) for $15 per person. The fee includes complementary snacks and a tasting booklet. Tastings will continue from 6-9pm.

On Friday, December 18th, Robert Anderson**, also a  “Master of Whiskey”, will guide guests through a tasting of five ultra-premium Bourbon and Single Malt Scotches and two whiskey based cocktails specially created by Bar Manager Aaron DeFeo to accompany an exquisitely paired five course dinner prepared by Maynards Executive Chef Addam Buzzalini. (View the menu below) The cost is $75 per person (plus tax).  The dinner will take place in the Drawing Room at Maynards at 7pm. Space is limited to 30 people. Reservations are a must.

The Grand Finale Tasting will take place on Saturday, December 19th beginning from 6-9pm, at Club Congress.  Admission is $15 and includes a taste of 10 whiskeys, complementary snacks and a tasting booklet. The tasting booklets from both the Thursday and Saturday events can be used throughout the weekend.  To receive specially priced whiskey cocktails at Club Congress or 20% off any food purchase at the Cup Café .

Tickets for all three events can be purchased online at or in person at the Hotel Congress Front Desk.  Tickets for the Whiskey dinner on Saturday can also be purchased at Maynards Market.

*Tom Turner, one of only fifteen Masters of Whiskey in the world has been in the spirit industry for ten years, having served as a Vodka Ambassador, studied Tequila in Jalisco, and sipped rum on exotic beaches throughout the world.  While Tom enjoys his work with all types of spirits, his heart belongs to whisky, which is why he considers his role as Master of Whisky for Diageo the pinnacle of his career.

**Robert Anderson was born and raised less than a mile from 7 million barrels of Scotch whisky, in Stirling, Scotland.  In his 18th year with Alliance Beverage Robert has extensive knowledge of Scottish, Irish and Kentucky whiskies. As a born and bred Scotsman, Robert has full license to display and wear full Highland Regalia, which makes just one more reason why he is a perfect fit, to serve as a “Master of Whisky”.
